Elizabeth A Soroka
Figurative Expressionism, Surrealism, Mexican Folk Art & Photography
Elizabeth is a self-taught artist as were her parents. Drawing and painting since early childhood, Elizabeth has been actively showing her work in different venues for over nineteen years. Focusing mainly on canvas art, her work also includes Photography, Wall/Mural Art and Functional Art. Her canvas art and photography has been included in numerous local gallery exhibitions and throughout varied national and international small press publications, book exteriors and interiors in print and online zines.
Largely influenced by her mother's Mexican heritage, Elizabeth states, “Along with the seemingly beautiful, I’ve a tremendous draw to the fascinating contrast between what some might feel as despairing and dark with something fragile and lovely. It appeals greatly to me, pairing the morose, like an image of our beautiful bones with a more commonly acceptable aesthetic; like the graceful curve of a form, an unexpected gentle and vulnerable expression, or that of our deep, ever so ancient connective sensibility to nature. It all seems a truer way to things...a truer reflection of one's existence...and sometimes showing the path throughout, to our very common end...a memento mori. There's so much more realness within the human psyche in our layers. The further down we venture into our souls, peeling all those layers back to have a look at all the grey that happens there.”
Elizabeth’s work is highly emotive, reflecting the subconscious and visceral emotion that lies both in waking and in sleeping dreamstates. Her images are surrealistic and wrought in symbolism...inviting the viewer a closer look, an introspection to their own personal perceptions. “Perhaps not easily expressed in words, they are simply, knowing things…things that are reality in dreams, things that are realities under it all.”
