Nephelomancy

papa stays

in the same house

 surrounded by the

things she used to touch

 it is all

still in place

 I could climb

the stairs right now

 pick out a dress

a favorite of hers

bathed in sunlight

from unshuttered room

 dance before her mirrors

as it fits me like second skin

 her perfume lingers

in bright tones

which seem

an octave higher

even now

 this air

belongs to her

 a new constitution

announces itself

in crisp whisper

 papa keeps crying

he waits for his head

to catch up with his heart

 the words

so few

soft as domestic water

 they come

as jewels

 he says,

 her hair was

the colour of fire

 a certain summer

he still knows well

 he tells me,

if I stare at the sky

send my eyes into the clouds

 I’ll know her

 she’s in the shapes

hidden there

 the secret alphabets

and shifting glyphs

that follow me

 I remember her soft lips

brushing over my eyelids

 the dream they’d bring

 I remember her scars

as I see the contrails

 an exaltation of larks

she’s singing now

 my eyes bounce

follow her song

waving at the aeroplanes

I feel her crashing

 softly

safely

inside.
